Descriptive Statistics

Descriptive Statistics

This week, you explore key statistical concepts related to data and problem solving through the completion of the following exercises using SPSS and the information found in your Statistics and Data Analysis for Nursing Research textbook. The focus of this assignment is to become familiar with the SPSS data analysis software and to develop an understanding of how to calculate descriptive statistics and make conclusions based on those calculations. As you formulate your responses, keep in mind that descriptive statistics only allow you to make conclusions and recommendations for the sample at hand—not for the larger population to which that sample may belong.

To prepare:

  • Review      the Statistics and Data Analysis for Nursing Research chapters      assigned in this week’s Learning Resources. Pay close attention to the      examples presented, as they provide information that will be useful when      you complete the software exercise this week. You may also wish to review      the Research Methods for Evidence-Based Practice video      resources to familiarize yourself with the software.
  • Refer      to the Week      4 Descriptive Statistics Assignment page and follow      the directions to calculate descriptive statistics for the data provided      using SPSS software. If you run into any difficulties or problems, post      them to the Week 4 Discussion 2 area (see attached file)
  • Download      and save the Polit2SetA.sav (see      attached file) data set. You will open the data file in SPSS.
  • Compare      your data output against the tables presented in the Week 4 Descriptive Statistics SPSS Output      document (see attached file) This will enable you to become      comfortable with defining variables, entering data, and creating tables      and graphs.
  • Formulate      an initial interpretation of the meaning or implication of your      calculations.

Nurses as Change Agents in the Community

Nurses as Change Agents in the Community

The discussion assignment provides a forum for discussing relevant topics for this week on the basis of the course competencies covered.

For this assignment, make sure you post your initial response to the Discussion Area by the due date assigned.

To support your work, use your course and text readings and also use the South University Online Library. As in all assignments, cite your sources in your work and provide references for the citations in APA format.

Start reviewing and responding to the postings of your classmates as early in the week as possible. Respond to at least two of your classmates’ initial postings. Participate in the discussion by asking a question, providing a statement of clarification, providing a point of view with a rationale, challenging an aspect of the discussion, or indicating a relationship between two or more lines of reasoning in the discussion. Cite sources in your responses to other classmates. Complete your participation for this assignment by the end of the week.

In the chapter, “How Community-Based Organizations Are Addressing Nursing’s Role in Transforming Health Care,” the authors describe the community as the focus of advocacy action for change. They list a series of questions that help community teams develop organizing principles to guide their interventions, and the aim is to attack social determinants of health to make community change.

Suppose a community team identifies lack of access to exercise modalities as a public health issue. If the team were to determine that pedestrian walkways need to be constructed, discuss at least two factors that would facilitate the development of the walkways and two that would hinder the development. For the hindrances, discuss ways that the team might work to overcome those hindrances.

Continue to read daily from one of the policy briefs that are included in your weekly readings list. POLITICO Pulse is a daily briefing from POLITICO, and the Kaiser Health News Morning Briefing is a daily briefing from the Kaiser Family Foundation. Both focus on health care. Either one will keep you abreast of what is happening in health care policies and politics.

In addition, subscribe to the “HealthCetera” podcast and listen to the podcast weekly. This is a production of WBAI, free speech radio of Pacifica Foundation Radio in New York City. Diana Mason and Barbara Glickstein are founders and codirectors of the Center for Health Media Policy (CHMP). Both are recognized as experts in media, nursing, health, and health policy. They have a longstanding relationship as producers and moderators of HealthCetera, a live, award-winning radio program on public radio and iTunes. They are bloggers for Disruptive Women in Health Care and for the American Journal of Nursing (AJN). The CHMP is an interdisciplinary initiative for advancing the health of the public and healthy public policies through media, research, education, and public forums. Listen to the podcast throughout the course and think on the topics that are discussed, especially as they relate to how we advocate for issues of importance in this contemporary political environment.

Sociology discussion response

Question Description

please reply ton this peer discussion

Peer discussion

Sociology is the study of how humans interact in society (Newman, 2017). The purpose of this discussion is to describe the importance of sociological imagination and define the three main theoretical perspectives.

The sociological imagination allows individuals to see the bigger picture of the forces that cause people to act the way they do (Newman, 2017). For example, divorce has become a big issue in recent times. For some people, divorce can seem almost normal because society has made it that way. In the nursing profession, the sociological imagination is important because it allows nurses to be aware of the historical and cultural aspects that affect a person’s situation and behavior.

There are three main perspectives on social order: structural functionalism, conflict perspective, and symbolic interactionism. Structural functionalists view society as a large system that is made up of many smaller parts (Newman, 2017). Structural functionalism relies on institutions such as educational facilities to train people to become useful members of society so that society can continue to thrive (Newman, 2017). Conflict perspective focuses on the struggles of society (Newman, 2017). Conflict sociologist believe that elements of society do not collectively make things run smoothly (Newman, 2017). Lastly, symbolic interactionism understands society by examining the interactions between people (Newman, 2017).

In nursing, symbolic interactionism is relevant. A big part of nursing involves communicating with patients, especially when it comes to gathering a health history and performing a physical assessment. By having face to face interactions with patients, nurses find out crucial information that can guide a patient’s plan of care. Using the symbolic interactionism perspective also allows nurses to be aware of a patient’s life experiences and how their experiences affected their health.

In conclusion, sociology is important to describe the events that occur in society. Sociological perspectives can easily be applied to nursing. The three main perspectives describe how society works from different viewpoints Overall, symbolic interactionalism can be applied to nursing because of a nurse’s emphasis on communication.

Discussion: Improving Cardiorespiratory Fitness

Certain inherited characteristics and behaviors may place people at higher risk of health problems (such as cardiovascular disease, stroke, diabetes, and certain cancers) and death. Physical inactivity doubles the risk for heart disease, while regular activity cuts the risk in half. A growing number of studies shows that regular physical activity also lowers the risk of having a stroke (Do Lee, Folsom, & Blair, 2003).

Physical activity may reduce or eliminate risk factors of high serum cholesterol levels, high blood pressure, glucose intolerance, obesity, and high stress. Moderate physical activity is associated with a reduced risk of heart disease, but the physical activity must be a regular lifestyle habit to have an impact. The greatest benefits occur in sedentary people who adopt moderate physical activity habits. Even as little as 2 miles of brisk walking on most days of the week can be beneficial, while additional protection against heart disease is gained as the time and intensity of exercise increases.

To prepare for this Discussion:

  • Review Chapter 3, “Cardiorespiratory Endurance: Assessment and Prescription” and consider how physical activity benefits cardiorespiratory fitness.
  • Review Chapter 10, “Preventing Cardiovascular Disease.” Focus on the long-term health benefits of cardiorespiratory fitness and the potential consequences of poor fitness.
  • Consider the types of activities that you like to participate in and their impact on your cardiorespiratory fitness.

With these thoughts in mind:

By Day 4

Post a brief description of two activities in which you are likely to participate that may benefit your cardiovascular system. Justify your choices based on their impact on cardiorespiratory fitness. Then explain how you will monitor your exercise intensity. Finally, describe how you plan to incorporate these activities into your personal fitness program.

assignment due sunday

Assignment: Fitness Activity: Developing Cardiorespiratory Fitness

By making some simple changes, everyone can include more physical activity in their daily life. The “lifestyle approach” seeks to increase opportunities for physical activity throughout the daily routine and accumulate at least 30 minutes over the course of most, if not all, days of the week. This is the minimum amount of physical activity that improves the quality of life while decreasing the risk of most chronic diseases. Examples of simple changes that may increase physical activity include:

  • Walk, cycle, jog, or skate to work, school, or the store
  • Take the stairs instead of the elevator or escalator
  • Play sports with the kids

It is important to understand, however, that exercise is not synonymous with physical activity; it is a subcategory. Exercise is physical activity that is planned, structured, repetitive, and purposeful, with the goal of improving or maintaining physical fitness. Through exercise, additional health and fitness benefits can be achieved by adding more time in moderate-intensity activity, or by substituting more vigorous activity.

A “personalized fitness program” should consider the individual’s current activity status and desired outcomes. Cardiorespiratory endurance can be considered the most important of the health-related fitness components because of its impact on the cardio (heart), vascular (blood vessels), respiratory (lungs), and musculoskeletal systems of the body. Cardiorespiratory fitness is a good measure of the heart’s ability to pump oxygen-rich blood to the muscles. The American College of Sports Medicine (Haskell et al., 2007) recommends participating in activities that use 55–90 percent of maximum heart rate for 20–60 minutes, three to five days/week.

To prepare for this assignment:

  • Review the media titled “Fitness Activities: Determining Heart Rate and Rate of Perceived Exertion” for proper instructions about how to complete the fitness assessment activities.
  • Review Chapter 3, “Cardiorespiratory Endurance: Assessment and Prescription.” Consider how the F.I.T. principles apply to a fitness program and how they shape individual workouts.
  • Review the Fitness Activity Instructions for either Fitness Activity Track 1 or Fitness Activity Track 2. Pay particular attention to the instructions for each activity.
  • Review the Fitness Activity Worksheet for either Fitness Activity Track 1 or Fitness Activity Track 2. Use it as a template for completing your Fitness Activity assignment.

Leadership In Nursing And Healthcare

Empathy, motivation, self– and social awareness—what thoughts or images arise as you read these words? These terms relate to skills for understanding, expressing, and managing emotions in self and others, which are attributes of emotional intelligence.

Research frequently demonstrates the importance of emotional intelligence for leaders and managers. In health care, nursing leaders who demonstrate emotional intelligence can positively influence organizational outcomes by contributing to improved nurse retention, increased job satisfaction, and better health outcomes for patients (Codier, Muneno, Franey, & Matsuura, 2010).

To further your self–knowledge, you examine your own emotional intelligence and consider strategies for developing this important leadership characteristic.

To Prepare

  • Review the leaning resources for Week 10. There are 2 tests that are available to you to assess your personal Emotional Intelligence. Take both the tests and consider your personal attributes of emotional intelligence..
  • Identify strategies for developing any areas of opportunity or areas for enhancing your emotional intelligence. What do you need to do to achieve or sustain a high level of performance in this area?
  • Also consider how to work with leaders who do not demonstrate strong emotional intelligence (EI) or whose EI strengths differ from yours. Include these strategies as well.

To Complete

Write a 2– to 3–page paper that describes the results of your emotional intelligence assessment and include your strategies for developing your EI. Be sure to refer to your week 10 resources to develop these strategies and of course cite any references that you use. Also consider how to work with leaders who do not demonstrate strong emotional intelligence (EI) or whose EI strengths differ from yours. Include these strategies as well.
